Frequently asked questions

How much does a corgi weigh?

An adult Pembroke Welsh Corgi weighs 10–14 kg. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are slightly larger at 11–17 kg. Males average about a kilogram heavier than females. We use 12 kg as the central estimate for a Pembroke.

Why did the Queen love corgis?

Queen Elizabeth II had over 30 Pembroke Welsh Corgis during her reign, starting in 1944 when she received Susan as an 18th birthday gift. The royal connection has made the breed iconic — corgis appeared on Olympic merchandise and the royal coat of arms.

Are corgis good family dogs?

Yes, with caveats. They're intelligent, affectionate and active, but bred as cattle herders — so they have strong instincts to chase, nip at heels and bark. With training and exercise they make excellent family pets. Without, they redecorate your skirting boards.

How many corgis are you?

An adult Pembroke Welsh Corgi weighs about 12 kg. A 75 kg adult equals roughly 6.25 corgis — Her Majesty could have weighed you out in royal dogs.

The royal dog of choice

Pembroke Welsh Corgis became synonymous with the British monarchy through Queen Elizabeth II, who kept more than 30 over her seven-decade reign. The breeding line began with Susan, gifted on her 18th birthday in 1944. At various points the Queen had as many as eight corgis at once — collectively weighing about 100 kg of royal canine.

Both breeds were originally working dogs in Wales — short enough to nip at the heels of cattle without being kicked, intelligent enough to outmanoeuvre a 600 kg cow. The two breeds split into distinct lineages in the 1930s after centuries of being treated as the same dog.

Corgi trivia

  • The corgi appears on the British 50p coin issued in 2022 to commemorate the Queen\'s Platinum Jubilee.
  • Corgis make up only 0.5% of UK dog registrations — they\'re less common than their internet profile suggests.
  • A pack of 9 corgis equals roughly one Queen Elizabeth II (the Queen reportedly weighed around 50 kg in later life).
  • Their short legs are caused by a genetic condition called chondrodysplasia, also responsible for the shape of dachshunds and basset hounds.
